Before you panic about roaches in your home or cottage, it’s a good idea to make sure there is a reason to worry. Wood roaches are fairly common in our area of Ontario – and in most cases, these will not require an exterminator. Wood roaches do not do well inside – they’ll usually die within 72 hours even if you do nothing at all.
German cockroaches, on the other hand, are well suited to living and reproducing among us.
While there are differences in appearance – wood roaches are smaller, and typically have lighter colouring at the edges; other types are more solidly coloured, for example. But probably the easiest way to tell which sort of roach you have is to pay attention to behaviour rather than appearance.
Wood roaches generally come in with wood – go figure! – and once they’re in, they tend to wander without much purpose. They are attracted to light. Wood roaches rarely survive long enough to reproduce inside.
Cockroaches, on the other hand, are more likely to be found in and around food sources. If you see them mostly in the kitchen, if they scatter when the door opens or the lights turn on, that suggests the yucky kind of cockroaches. Most of ours turn out to be German, but there are others that occasionally pop up.

Treatment for Cockroaches
As always, the treatment approach(es) that we use to solve cockroach problems will depend on your particular situation. In the case of relatively minor infestations, we generally start with baits, glue traps for monitoring, and dust; more serious infestations will require a thorough cleanout. Most often that includes spray and vacuuming.
We understand that dealing with cockroaches can be incredibly stressful – been there, done that, actually! Way back when my kids were young, we lived in an apartment complex in London, ON where whoever they were using for pest control was not solving the problem, we wound up moving to a different building altogether – at their expense! – because there was no way I was living with cockroaches.
Have you heard the story about how hard it is to get rid of cockroaches in apartment buildings? I heard it back then, and I still hear it today – or more accurately, see it all over the place online. It absolutely does not have to be that way. Even if you happen to have uncooperative neighbours, you can be cockroach free, and we will work with you to make that happen.
And the even better news? For us, solving the problem includes doing everything we can to make sure that you won’t be vulnerable to future infestations either.
If you are in Midland, Penetanguishene, Tay or Tiny Township, Simcoe County, or Severn, we are happy to solve your cockroach problem while caring for your environment.
